The exploration of Europeans helped them to attain new lands and contacts. The articles “European Exploration and Conquest, 1400-1700” and “Samuel de Champlain Founds the City of Quebec: 1608” both explicate information about European exploration and colonization. Additional information will also be applied by the book, “World Civilizations: The Global Experience” by (Peter N. Stearns). During the early modern era, the Europeans advanced well regarding overseas exploration due to efforts made by the Spanish, Portuguese, and the French. Efforts made by the Spanish during the early modern era, led them to explore and colonize many lands including most of Latin America and the Philippines. According to the article “European Exploration and Conquest, 1400-1700”, Spanish exploration first started in 1492 with the Genoan seafarer Christopher Columbus. Looking for success just like their European neighbors, the French also made an effort toward overseas expansion. According to the article “Samuel de Champlain Founds the City of Quebec: 1608”, French exploration gave way when a French sailor named Jacques Cartier set sail for North America in 1534. After establishing some relations with native tribes, Cartier wanted to claim this land known as Canada for France.(para.1) Soon after as several French traders visited Canada, they grew a liking to fur and started trading with the native population(para.2). One explorer named Samuel de Champlain, who had already established a colony on St.Croix and Quebec, established the French fur trade under The Company of One Hundred Associates(para.5). According to Stearns, the French had also pushed down from Canada into the Great Lakes region and the Mississippi valley(p.387).
