Euthanasia In Me Before You And The Giver

In many fiction books such as “Me Before You” and “The Giver,” assisted suicide was used. This fiction has now become a reality with the help of others, including physicians. Euthanasia is defined as “...the practice of painlessly ending the lives of people who have incurable, painful, or distressing diseases or handicaps.” (“Euthanasia” 421). There is much controversy about physician-assisted suicide, or PAS. The main point of disagreement is whether it is ethical or not. To understand what euthanasia is, people should explore the history of assisted suicide, see why some think euthanasia should not exist, and look at why others think PAS should be allowed. Euthanasia has been found all throughout history and has been a big influence on many different cultures. There are different types of assisted suicide. Euthanasia can be active or passive. When assisted suicide is active, the physician directly injects a shot that ends the patient’s lives. Passive euthanasia is when the life resources are taken away from the patient. Euthanasia can also be voluntary or involuntary. If assisted suicide is voluntary the patient asks for it but if it is involuntary, the patient does not have a say in the decision. One reason people think it is not good to have assisted suicide is because it can be argued that euthanasia can be avoided. In the case that a patient wants to be euthanized because of an emotional disorder, some say it can be deterred. One account says that people with emotional diseases do not need to be euthanized. They say that the patient needs help and medication. Others argue that the patient needs support and love from others. Some say that with these things, PAS for patients with emotional disorders can be made better and have a life instead of ending it. This is why some people say that physician assisted suicide is bad.
