One topic of thought that has unsettled philosophers and theologians for centuries is the debate about the nature and source of morality. There is an account given by Plato that discusses this, known as the Euthyphro Dilemma. Attributing to one side of the argument, I believe that God loves holiness or morality because it is holy. In other words, I think morality comes from outside of God, and he commands actions because they are moral. My basis for this argument is that I believe God is subject to a higher law and he creates order out of chaos; this in turn would show that God follows preexisting laws that could have characteristics of morality. The idea that God loves and commands actions because they are moral can be validated by the idea that there is indeed an eternal law that God is subject to. Doctrine and Covenants 88:36-38 suggests that all kingdoms are given a law with certain bounds and conditions. Later in chapter 82 verse 10, it is written that God is also subject to the laws in the sense that he must uphold the law through keeping the promises of the covenants that people make with him. If God were to make the laws, he could potentially choose not to follow them since he would be the ultimate decider. For example, one could make a covenant with God, and God could choose to not uphold his promise since he is the creator.
