The Stories of Eva Luna is an interesting and graphic novel written by Isabel Allende. Throughout the novel is woven a thread of power and revenge. Many of the characters experience hardship, which causes them to take revenge on other characters. Some of this stems from them being exploited by other characters as was a common theme to novels during this time period of twentieth century, modern literature. Another theme that is intertwined with the theme of revenge is the idea of life and death which is also common to literature of this time period. Many of the revengeful acts that occur incorporate some murder or attempted killing. Additionally, the theme of terror that overwhelms the possibility of rejuvenation makes itself apparent as a motive behind many of the acts that occur in the novel. When her son was just a boy, he went to pick up a mango on the property of one of the townspeople. The landowner did not appreciate the fact that he was trespassing and in order to scare him off he fired a shot from his gun. Tragically, instead of simply scaring him off, the bullet went straight through the boy’s forehead. The killer then fled. This horrific event deeply affected Inés, and she never forgot the face of her son’s killer. One day, he was bold enough to come back into town. It just so happened that he ended up staying at The Pearl of Orient, which was the local inn that Inés ran. She felt she had the right and authority to take revenge on this man because of what he had done. Therefore, she proceeded to cut off his head. Her revenge came in the form of murder, and she derived her power from the intense pain she had gone through with the loss of her own
