Evan Hogue’s days ran on a long-practiced schedule. He awoke to light classical music at 6:30 a.m. He fixed and ate his breakfast by 7, then spent up to half an hour reading his news feeds from national and local web sites. By 7:30, he was in the gym on his first floor. Accompanied by driving jazz, forty-five minutes jogging, twenty minutes of resistance training, thirty minutes of swimming (he had ordered and installed a steady-current swimming trough). By nine, he was in the shower, and no later than ten he was dressed and at his education center (one of several computer stations in his three-story house) for his on-line courses. Currently he was taking Pre-Classical Mediterranean History, Advanced Robotic Engineering, and Cosmology. If a course wasn’t offered somewhere online, he usually could at least find a lecture series. If the course involved lab work, he would sometimes go into his basement workshop to do the work there; if not, he would still work on projects of his own interest, usually in electronics. He had built his own security system around the house, for example, and was constantly adding peripherals to his computer systems. Dinner was at 6:30 or 7, and he would catch up on daily news while eating. By eight, he would retire to the third floor, the study off his bedroom to surf on the internet, catching current fads, popular culture, and blogs/columnists that caught his fancy.
