Andy is another human being who just wants people to accept him for who he is. How? Joining one of the biggest gangs is thought to be the easiest for people to famously recognize Andy. However, does society really know who Andy is or do they just know that he is a Royal? In Evan Hunter’s story, “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”, Andy is shown as a regretful boy by only caring of what others sees him as, rather than who he is. In Evan Hunter’s story, Andy is also shown as a wronged individual who accepts choices too soon without considering the possible consequences by actually ‘achieving’ his goals. Andy represents as being misunderstood, whom society has chosen to place a title on him, so he can be put into his own place in life.

Titles are something that society uses to put people into their positions in society. Nevertheless, Andy did not want to be known as just a Royal, but as Andy. The day Andy first became a Royal, he is grateful that even one of the biggest gangs, the Royals, had noticed him. Yet, he thought that there is a meaning behind his acceptance and his title, but as he stepped out to society, people did not know at all who Andy is and only knew he is a Royale. Considerably, Andy hates himself where “[] the title, and what good was the title if you were dying?” (Hunter 41). Andy finally wakes up to his dying reality, but “If he died, he was Andy. He was not a Royal. He was simply Andy, and he was dead.[]” (Hunter 40). In addition, when Andy qualifies into the Royals, Royals were represented by a purple jacket with black ‘ROYALS’ at the back. To Andy, the jacket meant acceptance and recognition of his existence. Thus, to society’s perspective, some hated it and others were scared of it. People did not care who Andy is and assumes the wrong impression, making him think “If he had not been wearing the jacket, he would not have been stabbed...the knife only hated the purple jacket []” (Hunter 42).
