In the short story, On the Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter, the theme is the labels and wrong decisions an individual may have that determine their destiny. In the story the cop says, “A Royal, huh?” to which his girlfriend, Laura, says, “His name is Andy”. The quote suggests that he has lost pity for Andy as the Royals are notorious for being a gang. The cop disregards his name and refers to him as a Royal as though he is no different from the rest of the gang. The cop made the assumption that he was just a gang member based strictly on his first impression of him. Thus, people should not be judged such that presumptions are made on their mannerisms, attitude, personality and character. The moral ties in with becoming an individual
