In the films Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, and Batman director Tim Burton uses Flashbacks and non-diegetic music to elude to the complicated pasts of his characters, By doing this it helps the audience realize how much the characters have really experienced and the depth of their pasts which the audience can then apply to people in their own life. The flashbacks in the many movies directed by Tim burton are very crucial in my point of view as it allows the audience to be engaged in the characters pasts and intrigues them to watch more of the movie to learn more about the Pasts and the exposition of the story. For example in “Edward Scissorhands” There are only a few flashbacks about Edward which makes it so when they appear the viewer directs their attention to the backstory unintentionally listening to the exposition of the story learning more about the characters which Tim Burton shows a lot in his films which shows that it could most likely be part of his style as it is a trend throughout his films. This made it for me intriguing to learn about Edward but mostly the creator/ inventor (whatever he is called) as the only information disclosed about him is in the few flashbacks from Edwards’s standpoint which in general cover very little about his past as well as the thought process that went behind the movie and the development of the character as well. As well as in Most prominently “Big Fish” as a large portion of the film is Edward Bloom Sr.’s life story and everything that had happened in his very extensive and eventful life all leading up to the end of the movie where any and most of the suspense and unknown about the stories is dispelled as the funeral happened where a majority of the exact characters from the stories were revealed to be true for a majority of them. I believe that one of the major underlying messages in Big Fish is to live life to the fullest until it’s over as Edward Bloom Sr. did and how he made the most of his life and always went after his dreams no matter how farfetched they may have seemed to others. As well in Batman the depth of Bruce Wayne’s character of being Batman the masked crime fighting vigilante all rooted back to the tragic deaths of his parents when he was a young child. Which in my opinion is a very large influence on the way one would live the rest of ther life and how they were raised or how they built their character. Which all tied back to the fact that the Flashbacks in Tim Burton’s movies and their symbolic meaning of just the massive amount of exposition in His films and background of the characters and the characters in general benefit largely from this as it gives them large amounts of potential and they fulfill it as well.
In my opinion as well the Non Diegetic music in the film is used as a Key for the Flashbacks to happen as well as to hint to the mood to the situation and foreshadowing in the movies by “Tim Burton” as in many of the movies the audio cues are very important for informing the viewer on what is going to happen
