“Everything always happens for a reason,” is one of the most interesting aphorisms that I know. Skeptical, I never was able to grasp the reality of the idea that there is an overall justification for every negative event that occurs. When my friend Francis Duddy died in a drinking and driving accident on February 8, 2014, the saying was put to the test. Consumed with grief, my entire world shattered. I often asked myself, “What benefit does his death have for me?” As time passed, I was able to escape the turmoil of emotions, and channeled that energy into creating a positive change in my community. I was inspired to initiate, organize, and lead a Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter within my school during my junior and senior year.
