Evil In Lord Of The Flies: A Character Analysis

I believe that humans are essentially good. We all have a heart that can be turned evil, but when we are first born our hearts are pure. Think of us humans as a fresh white canvas that is being painted by society and our environment. To make a person bad, something has to affect them in an evil way. In the book, Lord Of The Flies, it shows how civilized boys turn into animal-like savages after they crashed landed on an island during World War 2. Philosophers have been throwing around this question for years and the question still remains, do we essentially have a good nature and is corrupted by society or do we essentially have bad nature and is kept in check by society? They start off nicely, the little kids were quiet, Ralph became chief, Piggy became an outcast and Jack became a hunter. Everything was kind of normal for them to have no adult around, but as time passed by, things started getting worse. For example, on page 76 Ralph confronts Jack about letting the fire go out because he was so focused on killing the pig. ”You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home-”(76). As you read this specific part, you feel the bad nature creeping up on the boys, but they still try to keep their good nature alive. Ralph, as chief and Piggy as his extra set of brains, tries to contain order and continues with trying to build a civilization, with the hope of being rescued. The boys had too much freedom and their egos got to their heads. The wisest out of the group, Ralph and Piggy, killed Simon only because they were provoked by the other boys on the island or their “environment”. The boy’s savagery is brought out by the isolation of the island and perhaps they gained the ability of mistreatment from other kids or teachers at their school, maybe parents and family members, or even neighbors. They most likely got the war and killing from television or even World War 2 itself. There is something that introduced this type of behavior to them or it would not be
