In the story, The German Student, By Washington Irving evil is portrayed throughout the story. Some say the evil is caused by the main character, Wolfgang, Satan's Trick, and the French Revolution. One of the main causes of evil in the story is by satan’s trick. To begin with, throughout the story satan is referenced many times. For example, “evil influence hanging over; an evil genius or spirit seeking to ensure him and ensure his perdition”(Irving 1). The evil spirit that the story is talking about is satan. This is where the story says that there’s a state of eternal punishment where a unpenitent person passes after death. This is a reference to satan. This made Wolfgang very haggard and desponding.
