The student lives with his family in the Bayview Neighborhood of San Francisco with his mother and older brother. His mother is a single parent that works full time. His older brother is an eighth-grade student in the San Francisco School District and does not have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). There is an extended family in the area that assists at times with the family’s needs. The father is not currently involved with the family. The community in which they live has been historically a lower socio-economic working class area.

He is currently spending the majority of his school day within the general education classroom with pull-out supports from the resource specialist. Mother was concerned that he would not receive adequate academic services within the special day class. She desires him to be placed into a general education classroom so he would have access to general education curriculum and his general education peers. The student is at or near grade level in all academic areas which is very exciting for mom. Mom is also glad that the student is playing with friends at school. Despite not having a close friendship, she believes that his interactions at school are a stepping stone to creating longer-lasting friendships. One challenge that mom feels they need to overcome is she is concerned about his future and being able to maintain a job. She feels although his social skills have improved there is still a lot of need for him in this area. Another area she has concerns about is that he has been using inappropriate language lately. She has been working on him not using it at home or at school, but he still continues to use it without understanding the problems it could lead to. She wants him to learn appropriate social skills and believes that his current placement has its challenges, but it is better for him to be a part of the general education classroom. A third challenge mother noted is responsibility. She stated that he has improved in areas such as self-care but continues to struggle with cleaning up after himself and making sure his homework is completed.
