There are many themes that contribute to the story Beowulf. Some of the themes includes heroism, good versus evil, revenge, and being an outsider. One of the central themes throughout the story is heroism. There are many factors that tie into heroism in the story. Those three factors include reputation, lineage and characteristics such as bravery and courage. All three of these themes coincide throughout the story. The story is not only about what it takes to be considered a hero but also about the series of heroic acts. The heroic acts are how the characters establish their identity and reputation. Reputation was important in the story because it helps the characters not only identify with their own heroic acts but also with the acts of those who came before them. This is where lineage comes in to play.

During his battles with Grendel and the Dragon he showcases his bravery in many ways from the beginning to the end of the battle. Going into the fight Beowulf was never afraid of losing or the possible fate after the battle. This was one example that Beowulf showed his bravery. Beowulf proudly asserted “When it comes to fighting, I count myself as dangerous any day as Grendel. So it won’t be a cutting edge I’ll wield to mow him down, easily as I might. He has no ideas of the arts of war, of shield or sword-play, although he does possess wild strength. No weapons, therefore, for either this night: unarmed he shall face me if face me he dares. And may the Divine Lord in his wisdom grant the glory of victory to whichever side He sees fit.” (Beowulf, Lines 677-687). These lines can be interpreted that Beowulf felt that the decision using a weapon of any kind would be make the battle too easy, and that exemplified his bravery. Although the act might have been considered reckless to some one cannot deny that it demonstrated Beowulf’s courage and contributed to his heroic
