Narrative: It is about 5:00 PM when I arrive at the Mayo’s household. Brayden’s mother Tracey is preparing dinner in the kitchen while Brayden is standing at the end of the couch in the living room. His eyes brighten and he smiles as he sees new and familiar faces. Tracey comes to greet my family and I as she gives Brayden his toy truck before heading back to the kitchen to finish up what she was about to serve for dinner. For the next fifteen minutes Brayden seems unamused by his toy truck and begins to start climbing onto the couches, and other pieces of furniture. I watched Brayden climb all over the house before either one of his parents did anything. As his mom is setting the table and putting the food out she catches him climbing all over her furniture and she rushes to place him back on the floor. He grunts and tries to do it again, and she repeatedly places him back on the floor. After the third time around 5:20 PM she places him in his playpen and we begin to sit down for dinner. She doesn't overprotect him like many first time parents do with their first born. “From ten to fifteen months, babies become increasingly differentiated from caregivers and find a greater sense of themselves agents who make things happen.” (Brooks, 2015) This is exactly what Brayden has started to do by making his own choices and decisions. No parent is the perfect parent, so of course there are things she could have done differently. I think when Tracey was trying to punish Brayden she took the easy way out. She just placed him in his playpen without spending a good amount of time trying to fix his behavior. Though he is only fourteen months old, he understands the word ‘no.’ She should have said that word and tried to get him to understand that is not alright to climb all over furniture because he could potentially get
