I am Donovan Kopetsky, a member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe in Lower Brule, South Dakota; however, I currently reside in Aberdeen, South Dakota. I am entering my third year of college pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a criminal justice emphasis and a minor in psychology at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. I have attained the knowledge through my own learning experience that just about everybody has their own individual challenges in this uncertain world we live in, and I have set my goals to be able to be of service to the people of our community and society.
My father is very supportive of my educational endeavors; but unfortunately, he has been unable to assist me with college expenses. Consequently, I have been paying my own way by earning scholarships and working two part-time jobs …show more content…
I have been a mentor for these students in navigating and adjusting to the difficulties of adapting to college life and classes. In addition, I am serving as a student advisor on the NSU American Indian Advisory Committee, which meets with the University Provost once every month where we are attempting to strengthen the success rate of graduating Native American students. I also am involved and serve as the treasurer for the NSU Native American Student Association. Through these experiences, I have acquired new life skills and knowledge while at the same time providing service and assistance to those that need it most.
