“About 16--20% of students have high test anxiety, making this the most prevalent scholastic impairment in our schools today. Another 18% are troubled by moderately-high test anxiety.” states the American Test Anxiety Association.That number is incredibly high. As a student goes up to pick up their pencil, a wave of nerves fly onto them and test anxiety kicks in. Test scores can make you lose confidence and are not a suitable showcase of a student’s intelligence . But, what do test scores truly measure? How does the test know what horrible event may have occurred the day before a standardized test? So can a test truly tell you how well you are doing in school? No, it can't. A lot of awful situations can occur in a student’s life such a passing of a loved one or even arguments with family. Then, there are many students who simply do not perform well on tests. Many of these students are smart and understand the content, but it doesn’t show on the test. An example would be getting 100s on classwork and homework but receiving poor grades on standardized tests. Many students also develop test anxiety which hinders performance.
