Abigail Williams of The Crucible is one of the perpetrators whose egotistical actions to stabilize her reputation directly disturb her community. After being caught dancing in the forest with several other girls, Abigail threatens the others with a “pointy reckoning” and a “wish you had never seen the sun go down” (1.20) with that Abigail asserts her authority, becoming the dominant figure of the group. Abigail hastily condemns Tituba claiming she “[Made] me drink [Chicken] blood” and “truck with the devil” (1.43) in an attempt to protect herself from puritan punishment. As a result, Abigail’s reputation rises to untouchable heights as she, and her group, transition from accused to accusers.
