Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them.” Ambition is the strong desire and determination to achieve successes. The driving force of ambition and blind ambition is shown in people living in the United States by pursuing their goals and dreams whether being the CEO of Google, being a doctor for nonprofit organizations, or completing high school and receiving a diploma and throughout various characters in King Lear.
Young people who are involved in America’s education system can see blind ambition as they have not developed a specific goal in their minds on who they want to be in the future. In the beginning of the play, King Lear divides up his kingdom and gives it to his daughters if they confessed their love for him. Regan and Goneril put their blind ambitions to rule first instead of their feelings so they respond to his test by exaggerating their love for him more than anything else. Regan said "such inconstant starts are we like to have from him as this of Kent's banishment” to Goneril as this shows that they are being deceitful by reigning in secrecy and working hard to take down their own father’s remaining figure. The two sisters rather lie and get attention than be honest with their own family. This is also shown in American’s ambition because no one wants to work at the same level for their entire career. They work hard and the job force repays back with moving up the rank which means kicking current position employees just like how Regan and Goneril did with King Lear by “dethroning”
