Sammy and The Narrator from Araby: Heroes or failures?

Do you think a hero is someone who conquers all? Or, do you think they can be normal people that overcome struggles in everyday life and learn something new? Sammy from A&P and the unnamed narrator from the story Araby are both heroes although they are very different characters with different experiences, they both lose and gain different things, but what they gain far outweighs any negatives. Sammy learns how to overcome popular belief in his hometown, and the unnamed narrator learns that he shouldn’t revolve his life around someone who may not even appreciate his efforts.

Sammy has to choose whether or not to go by what he thinks is right, and stand up against popular opinion, or assimilate to everyone else's’ beliefs. Sammy decides to quit, maybe in an effort to rebel against popular opinion, or to gain attention from the girls. The questionable, attention seeking behavior Sammy displays in the story is proven in the last paragraph of the story when the author writes, “I look around for my girls, but they’re gone of course.” This use of the word “my” in that sentence shows that Sammy thought his quitting would guarantee him a relationship with the girls. Although Sammy was unsuccessful in gaining what he thought he would, Sammy learned a valuable life lesson.

The narrator from Araby is faced with conflict when he is late to the bazaar and can no longer buy a gift for his crush since everything is closed down. Although, he could have bought a ceramic-type gift for her, but he gave up instead. Most people would consider him a failure because of his lack of motivation to tell her how he feels.
