In the book, The Outsiders and The Clay Marble, S.E. Hinton and Minfong Ho wrote very similar characters and themes. By comparing Dara to Ponyboy, it becomes clear that they have many similar character traits. One similarity is their ending archetypes. The archetype for the character hero is a character who goes through a journey and comes back home to their “normal world”. Both Dara and Ponyboy go through a journey with ultimately going back to normal. Dara’s journey is her experiencing a whole new world in the refugee camp. But in the end, she and her family go back to their normal back onto the rice farm. Ponyboy’s journey is when he and Johnny killed Bob, they learned about themselves and life. An example of this is when she has faith that the clay marble will save her. Ponyboy’s initial archetype is a loner. The loner archetype means a character who is separated from society due to an impairment or an advantage that sets them apart from others. Ponyboy fits this archetype because as a Greaser he was considered a social outcast. With both of these characters changing their archetype, there must be a rebirth. Ponyboy experiences three different rebirths, the fountain in the park, the church fire, and him sleeping for three days after Johnny died. Dara was reborn also three times, when there were bombs and fires, standing up to the general, and standing up to her brother after Juantu died.
