“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... It was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort,” and so begins The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins, who most definitely should be considered a hero, is by far the most underrated hero in any novel or film. There are several reasons backing up this presumption. Throughout the novel, The Hobbit, there is a transformation that is seen in the character of Bilbo Baggins. While the transformation is quite drastic it becomes clear how and why Bilbo changes. The transformation from home lover to hero happens before most even seem to realize it. It happened when Gandalf brings to mind that not only was he of the home-and-peace-loving Baggins family, he was also of the brave and adventurous Took family. This realization …show more content…
Although this may seem true, nothing could be any more false. Courage is something, that for a long time, was lying underneath Bilbo’s skin, just waiting to emerge, and every now and then, it got its chance. Its first chance to show was quite early into the journey, when they stumbled upon a camp of trolls. Since Bilbo was at this point an unproven burglar, his courage allowed him to steal a key from the trolls, and even though he ended up getting caught, courage started to materialize. The next shining, courageous moment for Bilbo was an encounter with the contemptible Gollum. During these few moments of darkness, Bilbo not only survived Gollum, he was able to unintentionally steal Gollum’s precious ring. The last moment of courage that will be brought to light, is with out a shadow of a doubt, where Bilbo Baggins truly became the courageous hero. This moment was when, after many weeks within the depths of Mirkwood, Bilbo not only saved himself from a giant spider, but saved all of his dwarf companions. After saving himself from certain death, it is said, “Somehow the killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins.
