One example of crime as a social construction can be found with how race and gender translate into the criminal justice system. First looking at gender, men and women have been formally constructed in different ways for centuries. Distinctively, men have received more power on a higher level of the justice system leading to laws that benefit men over women. Society is generally inclined to follow social norms in terms of how we behave, dress, and act in various social interactions. Anything not considered normal is perceived to be weird, instead of being accepted for each individual being his or her own unique self.
