Eliezer Wiesel’s Night contains examples of Verbal, Situational and Dramatic Irony. Through these literary devices Wiesel is able to give readers an even greater feeling of immersion into his terrifyingly accurate novel. Verbal Irony is when someone says something and the opposite event ensues. Early on in the novel, Eliezer’s father makes the statement “The yellow star? Oh, well what of it? You don’t die of it…” Through this statement, Eliezer’s father is using verbal irony, because later on the Germans bring the Jews who wear the yellow star to concentration camps to be slaughtered. The wearing of the star was just one step in the direction of being killed. Another example of Verbal Irony is when Eliezer says “The SS offered us a beautiful present for the New Year.” This is irony because the SS didn’t give the Jews anything beautiful for the New Year, but instead held another selection in which they killed another countless number of Jews because they weren’t strong enough to continue in the work the Nazis wanted them to. …show more content…
An example of this type of irony occurs later on in the book when Eliezer chooses to leave the hospital early in fear of being slaughtered by the Germans as the rest of the Jews are evacuated to another camp because of the encroaching Russian Army. The Russians do come, but those that were left in the hospital were freed by the Russians, and not killed by the Germans as Eliezer thought would happen. Another example of Situational Irony is when Eliezer says “I've got more faith in Hitler than in anyone else. He's the only one who's kept his promise, all his promises, to the Jewish people.” Eliezer has abandoned his God because he doesn’t believe that God keeps his promises, but he will listen to Hitler because Hitler has kept his
