In Salem, Massachusetts, of 1962 there was an epidemic of accusing unliked neighbors of witchcraft. And the Crucible is a play of the witch trials in Salem. The people of Salem would find any reason to accuse someone that they did not like of being a witch, just as a means of getting revenge. Some believe the ideas of witchcraft in Salem, while others do not. The young girls are believed to be telling the truth when they pretend to be conjured by spirits so they can accuse anyone that they do not like of casting their spirits onto them. In the Crucible Abigail Williams is in love with John Proctor and has ideas of getting rid of his wife so that she may take her place. Elizabeth does not like that Abigail thinks to take John. Elizabeth is a rather calm type of person in most situations. But Abigail is very manipulative, especially when she only wants her way to be done. Elizabeth is calm when saying something that is difficult but needs to be said, just like when she told John, “... (delicately) John—grant me this. You have a faulty understanding of young girls. There is a promise made in any bed—” (Miller 493) Also when she said, “... (reasonably) John, have you ever shown her somewhat of contempt? She cannot pass you in the church but you will blush—” (Miller 493) There are many instances when Abigail is trying to be manipulative, Like when she told the other girls, “Now look you. All of you. We danced... And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it.” (Miller 468) She also tries to manipulate John when she says, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was... And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! Elizabeth and abigail are different in many ways. Both Elizabeth and Abigail handle situations in a different manner, think in different ways, handle situations in different ways, and have different values. But with all if those differences, the main conflict is that Abigail loves Elizabeth’s husband, John Proctor. And Elizabeth sees to stop Abigail from taking John away from her. This can relate to modern day in the way that there will be people that will do everything in there power to get what they want. And that there is always going to be someone that you are different with.
