In J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, the motif of falling highlights Holden’s fear of growing up and his need to protect children. Two occasions in which Holden attempts to solve these issues occur when he talks to the little girl at the park and when Phoebe is on the carousel. An example of when Holden protects a child occurs at the park. Holden heads to the park to see if Phoebe is there since she usually skates on Sundays at the park. Holden doesn't find her but he does however have a conversation with a nice girl that's about Phoebe’s age. Holden exclaims, “God, I love it when a kid’s nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something” (Salinger 119). Holden small act of kindness may not seem important but it is a
