Heroes are everywhere. All around the world, in every country, state, town, and neighborhood. A hero is someone who puts his or her own needs behind helping others. Are heroes born with the gift of heroism or do they develop it over their lifetime? What qualities makes a hero who he or she is? In Beowulf, the subject of heroes is explored as a fearless monster killer who conquers all challenges placed before him. Today heroes can be anyone from a friend in the hallway to a fireman or policeman. Malala Yousafzai is a well-known and powerful hero. She began as a humble little girl seeking education in Pakistan. Someone who is passionate is confident in his or her actions and intrigued in work. They can not be lazy, but they must be driven. Beowulf is driven by his desire to protect the shores and lands of monsters. He is also passionate about making a name for himself as the strongest warrior. He defeats the unbeatable monster Grendel and Grendel’s mother as well. These were monsters that no man could beat, but Beowulf did it without a weapon. He is passionate about fighting monsters. “I've stood on these cliffs longer/ than you know, keeping our coast free/ of pirates, raiders sneaking ashore”(Beowulf 134-139). Malala is very passionate about giving young girls all around the world the opportunity and right of education. This means that they are thinking of other’s interests before themselves. Throughout Beowulf, Beowulf is arrogant and selfish. By the end of the story he has a change of heart as he thinks about his people. Even though Beowulf sought fame when he killed the monsters he still protected and saved everyone from the dangerous monsters. “I sold my life/ for this treasure, and I sold it well. take/ what I leave Wiglaf, lead my people,/help them: when my time is gone”(Beowulf 1021-1024). Malala was selfless throughout her work. She fought for education not only for herself but for every girl around the world. Today she speaks and conferences and in classrooms to inspire students and governments to appreciate education.
