Heroism is a tremendous act of dauntlessness. Many think of comics and cartoons when hearing this word, but there are heroes that walk among people: these are policemen. Blood, sweat, and sacrifice all contribute to the safety of a community, town, or city. These outstanding men and women protect and serve without wavering. Policemen are an example of a hero because of their bravery, selflessness, and courage. Law enforcement officers demonstrate courage by moving towards a dangerous situation when others run away. Many speak of being a hero in certain scenarios, yet fall short of these unrealistic expectations. In addition, police officers put these heroic fantasies to action. For example, officers stopping a stolen vehicle in the middle of the night are aware that there may be an armed and dangerous unknown subject as a potential threat; however, they proceed in recovering the vehicle and stopping the criminal. To illustrate further, tactical teams have pre-planned operations for high risk situations where the threat of serious injuries or death is known, and still continue to be steadfast in pursuit. This is illustrated by actions of police officers during the 9/11 terrorists attacks, in that, they went towards the attack on the world trade centers when everyone was running away. No one was sure of the circumstances that were ahead, but they continued to climb the stairs of the collapsing building, rescuing the lives of those who were injured fromt the attack. As the building began to fall, policemen still continued to carry women and men out of the building to safety, resulting in some losing their life while doing so. Many law enforcement officers paid the ultimate price that day in order to protect the victims by laying down their own lives.
