Imagine having a crazy ex-girlfriend. She follows you around, stares at you during church, and listens to every word you say except for when you’re trying to remind her, again, that you broke up with her. Now imagine that this crazy ex-girlfriend is actually so i̶n̶ ̶l̶o̶v̶e̶ obsessed with you that she is actively trying to murder your wife, and doesn’t mind that she’s ruining an entire town in the process. This is what is happening to John Proctor and the town of Salem in 1692. The Crucible by Arthur Miller does a tremendous job at portraying the Salem Witch Trials while simultaneously showing the naturality of human nature at play, both good and bad. At the roots of this tragic tale however, stand the three traits that really define the true meaning that Arthur Miller was trying to get across-Truth, Courage, Weakness. The topic of honesty is majorly hit on in this play. Miller is able to easily display honesty in nearly every character. The three biggest examples that stood out to me were, ironically enough, when characters displayed dishonesty. Take the young girls for example. Miller shows us countless of examples of courage through our tragic hero, John Proctor. John struggles throughout the entirety of the play with his guilt. He knows he did his wife wrong and all he wants to do is make things right, but without ruining his reputation. When his wife is taken into custody after being accused by Abigail, it finally occurs to him what he has to do, and what he could lose in the process. Proctor goes to the court the next day and demands to be heard. Even though he knows the penalty for interrupting the court, he knows that whatever happens will be worth it if it means he can save Elizabeth. Judge Hawthorne won’t listen to him though, until John finally admits to lechery in attempt to prove Elizabeth innocent and Abigail guilty. He
