Holden’s Hypocrisy

In the book The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caulfield explores New York city after being kicked out of his school, Pencey Prep. Throughout the book, Holden meets many new people, many of whom, he describes as phony. Holden critiques many adults on how their actions are "phony" but then goes out and commits many acts that he himself would classify as phony.

At this point in the story, Holden is in the lavender room clubbing and meets an old friend of DB; his brother. At the end of the conversation on page 97 Holden states, “you could tell she was just trying to get in good with me so that I would tell old DB About it” early in the story, Holden meets a classmate's mother on a train going away from pencey
