Injustice System Surrounding Frankenstein Nothing is fair. In today’s society, it seems that almost everything is unsporting. Murderers are getting the least legal punishments, people of color are still fighting to be heard, the gay/bi/trans community is still ridiculed and misunderstood, women are still trying to be seen as equal to men. With all that is wrong with the world today, it is difficult to imagine all the injustice of times before now. Mary Shelley’s book, Frankenstein, gives us a very clear picture on how corrupt times were even in the 1800’s. Her perceptions still resonate in English classes today and from it students are more aware of how wrong the justice systems were back then and continue to be in the 21st century. She incorporates the French Revolution and its aftermath throughout her story. Frankenstein’s monster is believed to be the embodiment of the havoc the French Revolution created, “‘...originated in the idealistic desire to liberate all men from the oppressions of tyranny and mortality’” (Kourouma). Victor Frankenstein desired to find a way to eliminate death and did this by creating the monster; France desired to break free from the monarchy and did so by starting many uprisings and wars.
The French Revolution is “...said to be the most controversial historical act in the classification of what constitutes what human beings deserve and what they receive” (Kourouma). Shelley reflects this aspect of history through the accusation of Justine being wrongly accused of murder. She did not deserve this, but it is what she received. “ She becomes the victim of the inaction of Victor Frankenstein, the actions of the Creature, and of the inadequacies of the justice system” (Machado). Victor knows who the real murderer is but cannot admit to it out of fear for what would become of him, “The poor victim, who on the morrow was to pass
