Injustice has been a part of our history for years. Although To Kill A Mockingbird is an exceptionally brilliant, and beautiful story, Harper Lee really touches on America’s historically unjust tendencies. There are 3 specific types of injustice that are displayed throughout the novel. Racism is shown through the treatment of Tom Robinson, and eventually starts to affect Atticus Finch as well. Gender bias is shown when Scout is told to dress, act, and think more like a “lady” should. Moral injustice is also shown through Boo Radley’s life when he is judged and ridiculed for being different.

Racism is shown throughout the novel and all forms of discrimination are unjust. To Kill A Mockingbird has many parts that display racism and although they are important too, the biggest form of racism I was able to detect was when Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Although nobody said anything rude right to his face, he was talked about all through town. Although Boo was strange, and hardly came out of his run down house it is still unacceptable to show him anything but kindness when given the chance. An educated assumption about why Boo Radley’s behaved the way he did would be that he had some form of disability. Whether it be a form of autism, or a mental illness such as bipolar disorder, or depression we can’t know for sure, but Boo obviously didn’t receive the help he was in need of. For example Ms. Stephanie says “I heard that he was sitting with a pair of scissors cutting up paper for his scrapbook, when he stabbed his father’s leg and cleaned the blades off on his pant leg.” Ms. Stephanie has no valid proof of this happening, and if it did really happen she has no reason as to why.
