Innocent is defined as being not guilty of a crime or offense. These are good innocent people who are still hurt even though they did nothing wrong, these people are called Mockingbirds. In To Kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee, two kids learn life lessons about how people are misperceived in their community when they do nothing wrong. Mockingbirds symbolize people who are proven innocent but are still harmed.
Boo Radley is a Mockingbird because he is misjudged by society. They are attacked by Bob Ewell while walking home from the school play. “Anyway, Jem hollered and I didn’t hear him any more an’ the next thing--Mr. Ewell was tryin’ to squeeze me to death, I reckon...then somebody yanked Mr. Ewell down. Jem must have got up, I guess. That's all I know…” (Lee, 361) They are attacked by Bob Ewell because their father proved Bob was guilty in the court case. The children were mockingbirds because they did nothing wrong but were still harmed. In the end, the theme comes full circle when it is decided that they will not let others know Boo Radley saved the children. “Mr. Ewell fell on his knife. Can you possibly understand… Atticus disengaged himself and look at me “What do you mean?” “Well it’d be sort of be like shootin’ a mockingbird, wouldn’t it’” (Lee, 370) They don’t tell people because they don’t want to bring attention to Boo because he hasn’t interacted with people in such a long time. Mr. Ewell attacks the children because Atticus proved that Mr. Ewell was guilty, but the children were not involved in the situation but were impacted and hurt by something they didn’t cause, showing that they are mockingbirds.

“Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. “Your father’s right,” she said. “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us.
