Siting at the counter lifting the spoon to his mouth, Krebs slowly eats his breakfast, not noticing the words of his mother. Laying in bed, staring at the white ceiling, Nick ignores the words of his friend for his to marry. Both of these men have wandered off the path that others have paved for them. Some people are unconscious that those who suffered through the war, have lost their connection to their hometown. They don't realize that what they believe is best, may be just the opposite. In the stories, "Soldier's Home" and "Now I Lay Me", Hemingway uses isolation to create the image that as the men spent time in the war, they realizes that they could not go back to the person they were before. As Krebs sits on the porch, he is at a distance, watching the girls. "Besides, he did not really need a girl. The army had taught him that. (Hemingway 113)" By being away from society and knowing the horrors of the war that others cannot even comprehend, Krebs feels disconnected from the society that he once grew up in. The ignorance displayed by Krebs's community contributes to his isolations. When Krebs must resort to lying just to be heard, he is further alienated from his home.
