While reading the first three chapters of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I noticed many instances of juxtaposition. In chapter one the main differences are between the characters, Nick Carraway and Tom Buchanan. Nick is a humble man that grew up with money, but still aspires to be someone greater than just the money he has inherited. He works for money and does not act like he is better than anyone, presumably because of his father’s advice given to him not to judge anyone. Tom differs from Nick because he is all about having power and money, which determines one’s worth in Tom’s mind.
