In the short story “A Madman’s Diary” by Lu Xun the diarist was driven into madness by the Confucianist thoughts and ways in his society. One example of the madness the character possesses is when he claims, “The eater of human flesh is my elder brother” (Xun)! The diarists brother isn't really trying to eat him; his brother follows the ways of Confucianism, so he feels that his brother is trying to consume him. Another example of his madness is, “They are eating men now in Wolf Club Village, and you can see it written all over the books, in fresh red ink” (Xun). The people in Wolf Club are not really eating people. They are worshipping or practicing Confucianism. Lu Xun uses this character to send out the message that not everyone needs to be a Confucianist because if you force someone to, it might just drive them insane.
