The journa articl reviwed Moving the misdiagnosis debate forward, serves as the tip of the iceburg on the cataclysmic resluts of missing the diagnosis or misdiagnosis of psychiatric illness around the world. Kwame McKenzie provides a push at one of the most impactful discussions in the mental health field today, the misdagnosis of clients with the additonal focus on minority populations. This journal article deals with uses of misdiagnosis on an institutional level as well as indivual bases and hypothese of why these misdiagnosis may be occuring. The article utililizes mulitple cases of the African- Caribbeans population in the UK and the phenomena of how many have been misdiagnosed with mental illness such as schiophrenia. After further investigation the African-Caribbean popluation were actually suffering from brief reactive psychoses developed largely by socio economic factors. Similar effects are evident by the high rates of schizophrenia in hospital based samples of African Americans in the 1980’s. Many of clinician bias or stereotypes lead them to make the wrong diagnosis. Many clinicians are uninformed of the differences of alcuturation and assume all populations are affected by and respond to similarly. US studies show there is less time given to African –Americans with mental health problems when they attend emergency rooms than White
