In F scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby Nick Carraway is a homosexual man but is deceitful to himself and Jay Gatsby. Nick's deceitfulness is out of fear, which leads him to dealing with a true love's death.
Nick Carraway is a gay man “I was standing beside his bed and he was sitting up between the sheets, clad in his underwear, with a great portfolio in his hands” (37). From this quote we can infer that Nick has had sexual experience with a man and that “ a great portfolio in his hands” symbolizes his sexual organ. Before this happened Nick was with Tom Buchanan at an apartment with myrtle and her sister along with her sisters husband; at the apartment everyone got drunk and Tom hit Myrtle ( IC;IC ). We can see the infatuation Nick has for Gatsby when he describes his face to us “ It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself”(48). Just from this sentence we can recognize the feeling that Nick has when he first sees Gatsby, love at first site. Nick describes Gatsby as an understanding person who believes in people, the choice of words used was not an accident. The author wanted us to see how Nick relies on Gatsby for reassurance in himself and how Nick feels gatsby is someone who believes in him. It only takes one sentence for someone to understand the emotional attraction Nick has for Gatsby. Nick doesn't even describe Jordan Baker in a way of interest or at least in a way that makes him seem even the slightest infatuated with her appearance “She was a slender, small breasted girl, with an erect carriage, which she accentuated by throwing her body backward...like a young gadget” (11). He compares jordan to a gadget, Never have I ever met a woman who would like to be compared to a piece of metal. This just shows us the lack of character nick feels jordan even has. A gadget symbolises something that's just there to be there and that exactly how nick feels about jordan, there is no emotional feelings attached.
