Living through war can impact one’s life emotionally. One serious way it can impact someone emotionally is by giving them PTSD. The Mayo clinic explains that “PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a disorder characterized by failure to recover after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event such as war” (Mayo Clinic). It causes events such as serious road accidents, violent personal assaults, such as sexual assault, mugging or robbery.
One example of PTSD impacting someone is in the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini when Hassan's son, Sohrab attempts suicide. He does this because of the terrible experiences at the orphanage and terrible things that Assef had done to him. Sohrab says to Amir “Home for Kids? He said, his smile fading. Torture is when someone purposely takes someone hostage and beats them, uses their fears to scare them, and anything that inflicts pain. Months after someone is tortured they can have flashbacks of what happened to them. They can have severe depression, anxiety, and lack of sleep which are all symptoms of PTSD. In the article “ The lingering effects of torture” publisher Devin Powell, writes about Adeel, a man who was interrogated in Guantanamo Bay while in U.S custody. Adeel says in the article, “I was kept in isolation in a chilled cell, blasted with loud music to prevent me from sleeping, and forced to stand motionless in the hot sun for hours. He then explains “I feel like I am in a big prison and still in isolation. I have lost all my life” (“The Lingering Effects of Torture” Powell). Powell says the he was eventually diagnosed with PTSD and depression. This shows that Adeel was effected by a war crime emotionally and was affected for life. As a result Adeels lost feeling in life and the feeling of still being isolated in the prison are some effects from his
