There are many differences between piety and morality. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, the protagonist struggles with whether he want to be an ethical or pious person. Unlike the majority of other characters in the novel, Huck does not understand the point in religion. He believes that making the right decision is much more important than the pios one. He says “All right then, I’ll go to hell”(Twain 228) to show how the idea of being in hell does not impact his decision making. Miss Watson, the Grangerfords, and the Shepherdsons foil this signature trait.
