One social stratification term that best describes the events and circumstances from the video “Rape in the fields” is power. Power is defined as the ability to compel other individuals to do things that they would not choose to do on their own accord. In one case, one of the undocumented female workers that came forward stated how the supervisors “use their power to mistreat or abuse people.” She described how one day her supervisor (Rene Rodriguez) brought her to an almond orchard, a place far from others, and took the opportunity to abuse her and rape her at gunpoint. “He said that I was his, and that he would never leave me in peace.” She couldn’t say anything because she was terrified it would cause her to lose her job which is the only source of income to supply her children with food and a roof over their heads.
