A round character is a character that is complex and has a fully developed and dynamic background and personality. There are several facets to a round character’s personality, making them life-like and multi-dimensional. In contrast, a flat character is one-dimensional character that can often be explained in a few adjectives or words such as “the bully”. They lack emotional depth and are often used to further a story’s plot. Both types of characters can be found in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
