Love and Sacrifice In all walks of life, and in any relationship, there are two types of people. There are the ones who serve others and the ones who are served by others. This idea of selfless service is shown throughout Khaled Hosseini’s book, A Thousand Splendid Suns. When love and passion are evident in a relationship, it drives one to making self-sacrificing actions. When it is not present, that’s when selfishness comes in. It is through that love that someone desires the better of another. One instance of this is how Mariam is in a position where she must share her husband with another woman, making her angry, but learns to love and stand beside this other woman against the hardship they share. Her house is open and she cares for Laila in the tasks she completes. Additionally, Mariam is willing to give up her life and freedom for the happiness of Laila and her family. She is the sacrifice for the family she has become a part of. Looking through the research, it is proven that Hosseini has truly given an accurate representation of the way humans are willing to sacrifice themselves for the ones they love.
