Theme is a big idea we take away from a story after reading it. In the novel, Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, the primary theme of the story is good sportsmanship. The theme of good sportsmanship shows up in many events throughout the novel. Over and over again, the reader sees the characters struggling with this theme. Edward Bloor develops his characters to represent the importance of good sportsmanship and what reveals about mankind.

One of the events from the novel where the reader sees this theme is when Paul takes over the placement for Victor during the soccer game. On page 135, we read “ The head butt that he put into the net must have reopened the cut, because it was sure bleeding now.” and also on page 135, we read “Paul Fisher you are in for Victor.” This shows how Victor is struggling with the bleeding in his head. Having this experience teaches Victor that sometimes you will have to share your glory. In addition, Victor used good sportsmanship by letting Paul take his position and not having a fight with the coach. Clearly, the theme of good sportsmanship is being revealed to the reader.
