Stereotypes still exist today and the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is no exception. It is the 1960s in Oklahoma. The west side of town is soc territory and the east is greaser territory.How society sees the socs is neat,caring, rolemodles and and society sees greasers as rebelious rule breakers. The characters are affected by their surroundings because it affects how they act, think, dress, and how they live. It also affects how the story plays out. To start off, Darry is one of the main characters. He is affected by his surroundings because of his parents death and where he lives. For example, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they will get jumped or someone will come by and scream, ‘Greaser!’” Thus if they lived the better …show more content…
All in all, the setting affects character development. In addition to that, The setting affects the storyline because it affects how the story plays out. One example is that it says,”We just didn’t have enough money for him to go to college.” If they had more money, Darry would probably be able to go to college. Another example is,”Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” If their parents would have been there, Darry most likely wouldn’t have slapped Pony and he wouldn’t have run away. One final example is that “I fought desperately but only sucked in more water.” If the socs hadn’t have tried to drown Ponyboy, Johnny most likely wouldn’t have killed Bob. To summarize, the setting affects the storyline because it affects how the story plays out. In the long run, the setting affects character development because it basically affects how they live.It also affects the storyline because it affects how the story plays out. So, they setting affects the story greatly because it determines what the characters living conditions are, how they act, and how they live.
