In the hospitals when a baby is born they are usually wrapped in either a pink or blue blanket depending on the sex of the baby, as pink is a feminine color and blue is masculine. This is just the start of the gender stratification in society. A structural-functionalist would say gender identity is not an issue because it shapes our society giving everyone a function (Macionis 2013). The women clean the household and take care of the children while the father works hard all day earning the money for his family. Structural-functionalist believes without this society could not function because it is everything the people in society know and understand. Take away gender and no one would know how to reproduce or who would do the cleaning around
