Some people are obsessed with the idea of being or staying young, and would do almost anything to achieve this goal. This would be considered as “transhumanism”, which promotes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and analyzing the opportunities for improving human condition and the human organism with the help and use of advanced technology. Scientist’s confidence lies in both present technologies like genetic engineering and information technology, and anticipated future ones, such as molecular nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. An example of transhumanism was well displayed in the story, “Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment”. In Dr. Heidegger’s experiment he uses an elixir which uncovers his motivation for the experiment and his guest’s motivations for the use of the elixir, the successful outcome of his use of the elixir was the reaction Dr. Heidegger was looking for, this story also had broader contemporary implication for the use of science in regards to transhumanism. They all resumed their old habits and began to relive the troubles from their past. This was a success for Dr. Heidegger proving that even if given a second chance to change humanity will always repeat its history and will continue to make the same mistakes of its past. Dr. Heidegger’s conclusion of the elixir was that even if the water from the Fountain of Youth was at his doorstep he would not drink from it. As he said, “having had much trouble in growing old, I am in no hurry to grow young again” (Hawthorne, 1860). I agree with Dr. Heidegger, if you make a mistake you are suppose to take it as a learning lesson and live with that decision. Also humans were meant to grow old and wither away and die, if everyone were meant to stay young forever and never die the world would become corrupt from all the repeated
