When is true love true? To find this out, true love needs to be defined. In the play A Midsummer NIght’s Dream there are a couple of instances of romance, some of these are seemingly true love while others are almost obviously false, but to really determine whether they are true or false you must ask a question: what is true love. To answer this question, reviewing certain instances of these romances will be necessary. Some of these romances include: Demetrius and Helena whose love was forced upon them by the power of a plant touched by cupid's arrow, Pyramus and Thisbe, whose foolish love led to their deaths, Lysander and Hermia, who are willing to do anything for love, and finally Theseus and Hippolyta, whose love was born in battle but may be more than just politics. Going over these encounters one by one will assist in defining true love and answering the question, when is true love true? Lysander and Hermia were madly in love and could not stand to be without one another, but Hermia’s father would not allow it. Hermia’s father wished for Demitrius to marry Hermia and Demetrius did wish to be with her but Hermia did not love Demetrius. As this situation was a problem, Hermia’s father Egeus took it up with the king Theseus, and they conversed over the matter, deciding that if Hermia did not marry Demetrius she would have to either be put to death or become a nun living a life of celibacy and seclusion. Lysander and Hermia like Pyramus and Thisbe so madly in love, did the first thing they could think of and planned to elope and run away from their families forever sacrificing any ties that they had to where they had lived their whole lives. These extraordinary acts of leaving everything behind that these two lovers undertook, shows to me undying love for one another, they are willing to do anything for each other proving their true
