The Merriam- Webster Dictionary defines exercise as “physical activity that is done in order to become stronger and healthier.” Exercise should be implemented in everyone’s daily lives. It is important to have daily exercise because it lowers the risk of any cardiovascular diseases, is able to fend off certain types of cancer, can better a person’s mood and can build and improve one’s bones. Schools should make it one of their top priorities to ensure that children are able to get the daily exercise they need to stay in shape. Exercise should be better utilized in school so that kids can stay in shape. Schools that have more physical activity can allow kids to achieve and maintain their body weight. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that about “17% of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese” in our world today. That means approximately one billion kids in the world are corpulent. These numbers can decrease if school systems required at least an hour of moderate or vigorous exercise every day. Ms. Cook states that “long-term excessive endurance exercise induces pathologic and potentially fatal structural remodeling of the heart and large arteries in some individuals.” This can be found to affect many marathon runners. Some studies show that “12% of apparently healthy marathon runners had evidence of patchy myocardial scarring” (Susan Dawson-Cook). She also states that this type of damage is found in “individuals over 40.” The Center for Disease Control and Prevention refutes her point by stating that the “health benefits of physical activity far outweigh the risks of getting hurt.” An hour a day of exercise is all a person needs to stay healthy and not drastically hurt
