The story of the Zodiac killer began near Benicia, California on the night of December 20, 1968. A man discovered the bodies of two teenagers at “lovers’ lane”, which is a spot along Lake Herman Road. The victim’s, Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday, were out on their first “official” date. Betty Lou was found dead from five gunshot wounds in her back and David Faraday died from a gunshot wound to the head. The investigation produced no liable suspects and continued into the summer of 1969 (Montaldo).
More than seven months passed after the murder of the two teenagers. However, on the night of July 4th, 1969, a man attacked a second young couple at the nearby Blue Rock Springs Park. The victims were Darlene Ferrin and her friend Michael Mageau. Darlene died from multiple gunshot wounds, but Michael survived. He had wounds to his leg, neck and jaw. Mageau told the police that Darlene picked him up at his house and the two were planning on going to Mr. Ed’s diner. They decided not to and instead went to the park. A cabdriver picked up the Zodiac killer and was directed to the intersection of Washington and Maple Streets. However, the cab was found parked one block further. The cab driver’s body was discovered inside the cab, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. An envelope was found in the cab driver’s shirt and said October 13, 1969. The letter said, “School children make nice targets I think I shall wipe out a school bus some morning just shoot out the front tire and pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out.” Patrol cars and aircraft followed buses to and from schools and armed officers rode onboard for extra protection
