Effective communication is fundamental in building a strong, positive relationship with children, young people and adults alike. Effective communication encourages mutual support between pupils, parents and colleagues. Without it they will not achieve their full potential. With effective communication adults, young people and children will feel respected, welcomed and valued as individuals and will demonstrate more of a compassionate attitude amongst each other. As well as verbal communication you also have to be listening to what that person is saying to be able to respond in an appropriate manner. How we communicate depends on whether it is an adult or a child, the method needs to be adapted accordingly.
There are many similarities between communicating with adults and with children – for example: always look them in the eye and be interested and respond to what they are saying, and treat them with politeness and respect.

Therefore they need to have given enough opportunities to speak and share their opinions and convey themselves with adults. Eye contact when talking to children is important so that it gives the attention that you are listening to them attentively. Body language and facial expressions are also important forms of communication to children such as smiling or sitting next to them so that you are at their level and react and comment to what they are saying so that you are giving them your full attention. In is important to be interested, responding and questioning to maintain conversation. By being honest with the children, the TA will earn their trust and by praising them, they will feel proud of themselves and will likely have a positive impact on their studies and their social
